Switching your current membership to Sprout

In this early phase of the recently-launched Sprout membership, the process of switching your current Internet membership to Sprout is slightly different from changing between Sustainer, Contributor, and Contributor Plus memberships. Thank you for bearing with us in this transition period as we are actively streamlining our process to elevate your experience.

From now through October 2025, if you want to switch your current Contributor, Contributor Plus, or Sustainer level to the Sprout level for the remainder of your active membership, you can take the following steps:

  1. verify if your device is compatible with the Sprout SIM
  2. log in to your account
  3. click Devices on the left-hand menu
  4. click Order Replacement Device to order a BYOD SIM (no contribution needed)
  5. click Profile on the left-hand menu
  6. Update the Mailing Address to where you want the SIM card to ship to

This will ensure that you get the Sprout SIM card. If you run into any issues in the process, please contact us at help[at]calyxinstitute[dot]org.

If you wish, you can use the SIM card that comes in your Sprout membership in a hotspot you received from your previous membership. However, using a Sprout BYOD SIM in your Calyx hotspot will affect the level of tech support that our hardware and tech support provider, Mobile Citizen, can provide. Even though the hotspot was originally provided by Mobile Citizen, once it’s used with a Sprout BYOD SIM it's treated as third-party equipment by Mobile Citizen, and is no longer covered under Mobile Citizen’s standard support services.

When a Sprout BYOD SIM is used in a device originally provided by Mobile Citizen:

  • It no longer qualifies for support under Mobile Citizen’s standard service model.
  • Mobile Citizen can’t guarantee it will function as expected.
  • Support is limited to BYOD terms, meaning Mobile Citizen will not provide device-level support in that configuration, only SIM-level support.
  • Limited warranty still applies if the device is within the warranty period.

If you wish to use your Sprout BYOD SIM in a hotspot you have previously received from us, please email help[@]calyxinstitute.org with the IMEI of the hotspot so we can unlock the hotspot for use with your Sprout BYOD SIM.
